Thunder Bay

Photo-ThunderBay-Penrose0202Thunder Bay National Marine Sacturary and Underwater Preserve has one of the nation’s most significant collections of shipwrecks. The bay also had a spiritual significance to early Native Americans that lived in the region.  The Thunder Bay is often referred to as the shipwreck coast, over 160 known shipwrecks are located in the immediate area.  The coast from Rockport to Thunder Bay Island includes the historic lighthouses on Middle Island and Thunder Bay Island and a shipwreck is visible in shallow water along the shore.   Photograph courtesy of Penrose Outdoor Photography.
